AI Coding Terminals Compared: Claude Code mods vs Agent-Chrome vs Expanded AI CLIs (2026) — Three AI coding terminal approaches shipped within a month. One is an official hook system. One bolts Claude Code onto Chrome. One turns the terminal itself into a visual workspace. After hands-on comparison our verdict: mods is ecosystem-grade; the other two are workflow patches.

Why every developer needs an AI-native terminal in 2026
Over the past year, the AI coding battleground shifted from autocomplete to delegation: you give Claude Code or Codex a natural-language instruction and it reads code, edits files, and runs tests on its own. But a new breakpoint emerged — these agents run in the terminal, and the terminal is a 1980s interface. You can't see progress while tests run; your window focus gets stolen when the agent opens a browser; running three sessions means tab-hopping chaos. This month, three teams answered from three directions: Anthropic shipped the mods hook system, Agent-Chrome fixed browser focus stealing, and another camp expanded the terminal into a visual workspace. This article puts all three on the same table.

The verdict up front: what each route really is
mods is an ecosystem bet — it doesn't touch the terminal; it adds a programmatic side-channel to Claude Code where your TypeScript functions can observe, rewrite, or intercept every event. That means the community can build workflow layers without waiting for official support. Agent-Chrome is a workflow patch — it solves one specific scenario ("the AI needs to see a web page") very well, but covers just that scenario. The expanded terminal is an experience upgrade — multiple AI CLIs in one visual workspace, great for heavy multi-taskers, at the cost of binding you to its interface. In one sentence: mods changes how programmable your AI agent is; the other two change where you watch it work.
Claude Code mods:

Claude Code mods: the official hook system, capabilities and limits
Mods are small TypeScript modules distributed with plugins, hooked into Claude Code's event stream. Four capabilities: rewrite prompts (e.g. auto-inject project conventions), intercept or retry tool calls (e.g. block writes to production directories), turn permission approvals into code policies, and add custom UI (the official tutorial demos a "Token Weather" plugin showing live context-window headroom). Requires Claude Code 2.1.287+, integrates with /diff and AGENTS.md. The honest take: this is the only programmable option of the three — you can build workflows nobody imagined yet. But the permission boundary is a real concern: a malicious mod sees every prompt and every line of code, and no trust mechanism for a mod marketplace exists yet. Enterprises should only run internally-reviewed hooks until the ecosystem matures.
Agent-Chrome:

Agent-Chrome: a focused fix for one real pain
When Claude Code needs to open a web page — verifying a deployment, checking docs — the default behavior throws a Chrome window over your editor and steals focus. Agent-Chrome's fix is elegant: Chrome always renders behind the terminal. You see what the AI is doing; your typing never stops. When a login or CAPTCHA appears, you step in immediately, using your existing Chrome profile — no re-authentication. Compared to headless mode, visual means auditable. The limits are equally clear: one scenario only (the AI using a browser), macOS + Chrome + Node.js only. If your agents touch the web frequently — frontend work, deploy verification, scraping — it's plug-and-play. Otherwise you won't notice it's there.
跨平台支持 macOS 和 Windows/WSL。

The expanded terminal: aggregation for heavy multi-taskers
The third route doesn't patch the terminal — it replaces it with a visual workspace: multiple AI CLIs (Claude Code, Codex, and friends) in one unified interface with parallel sessions, live code-review views, comment annotations, and doc lookup. Cross-platform on macOS and Windows/WSL. The fitting scenario is specific: you run two or three agent tasks in parallel (say, one refactoring the frontend while another writes tests) and need to switch and compare sessions quickly. The cost is learning curve and lock-in: you give up muscle-memory terminal flow for global visibility. If you run one or two agent tasks a day, the abstraction is overhead.

English verdict
Our verdict: mods is the only ecosystem-grade play of the three — it turns your AI coding agent from a black box into a programmable system, with the highest long-term value. But permission governance is an open problem: fine for individuals, proceed with caution for enterprises. Agent-Chrome is the most honest tool: it fixes one specific pain and doesn't pretend otherwise — if focus-stealing has burned you, it's a five-minute install. The expanded terminal suits genuine multi-agent power users; most people can skip it. If you pick one: mods if you're on Claude Code and committed to AI workflows long-term; Agent-Chrome if focus-stealing is your daily pain — and yes, it burned me before I wrote this. They don't conflict — a mod can drive Agent-Chrome.
EN: How are mods different from traditional hooks config? — Hooks are shell-command-level interception points; mods are plugin-distributed TypeScript modules with full event-stream context, data rewriting, and custom UI — from interception scripts to programmable extensions.
EN: Can I use all three together? — Yes and recommended: mods for workflow automation (inject conventions, block dangerous ops), Agent-Chrome for browser scenarios, the expanded terminal for multi-session management — they solve different layers.
EN: What should enterprise users watch out for? — Mods see every prompt and every line of code, and no plugin trust mechanism exists yet — enterprises should run only internally-reviewed mods and bound their capabilities via AGENTS.md and permission policies.
